How to Fix Computer Overheating Caused by Blocked Heat Sink

One of the biggest problems in PC desktop computers is overheating which can lead to random shutdown. This can be caused by blocked heat sink on the central processing unit. Here's how to solve that problem.

steps:

1
Unplug your computer before opening the case. Wear a static wrist guard if possible, or touch the metal case before handling anything inside, to ground any static charge you may have.

2

Consider other options first. Overheating issues are also often caused by poor air circulation in the computer case. If you have space, adding another fan can help. Also, you should regularly open the case unplug all the cords and carefully take your computer system outside use a can of compressed air or an air compressor. A small vacuum is a good second choice but you have to be careful not to hit any internal components with it, and avoid touching the circuit boards with anything. Take your time and be very thorough with this step. Next take a cotton swab dabbed in some rubbing alcohol and go over the internal case components to get them very clean. You can go over the external case with a rag and a little bit of water. Allow your system 2 hours to dry out before turning it back on.

3

Remove the small CPU fan plug from the motherboard. Grasp the plastic end and pull carefully until it comes out. Don't pull it by the wires.

4
Remove the CPU cooling fan. It may be held in place on the motherboard by four Phillips screws or a lock-down lever.

5
Release the CPU. Often it is held in place by a small lever that lifts to release the processor.

6
Take care not to drop the processor or pull it off if it's stuck. Dropping the processor will likely damage it. Alternatively, it may be stuck to the heat sink by thermal paste. Try to separate them. A credit card-type card can be useful for this step, but don't damage the CPU trying to pry them apart.

7
Clean out the heat sink. Blast compressed air directly on the heat sink. It only takes a few good quirts to clean a blockage. If it's persistent, allow a few seconds before repeating.

8
Carefully wipe off any thermal paste. Use a clean cotton bud or paper towel. A little rubbing alcohol may help, but too much could cause damage.

9
Test your computer to make sure everything works.

How to Connect Two Computers With a Serial Cable

The connection by serial cable between one computer and another is a method that can be employed when recycling old equipment for new purposes. It is a method that you can do use to allow a channel of communication between the computers (or other like devices such as networking equipment control ports) when a more prevalent method of networking with RJ45 Ethernet networking is not available or desired.

Steps:

1
First a cable must be obtained for the connection. For tips of how this can be done please see the #TIPS section of this page

2
Enter the cable to each of the computers via the Serial port. It is important not to get confused between the "Serial Comms" port and the "Universal Serial Bus Port".

3
Start up a Serial Communication program. Often people have a Windows by Microsoft operating system - and by a default the most used program for this is Hyper Terminals.

4
Select the correct Serial Port from the File/New Connection menu item

5
The two computers are now connected physically and a communication path has been created between them. You can now send text characters between the computers using the HyperTerminal application.

How to Fix USB Device Not Recognized in Windows

How to Fix USB Device Not Recognized in Windows:

USB Device Not Recognized in Windows (Problem Solved)

Are you getting a “USB device not recognized” error whenever you plug in a USB mouse, keyboard, or other USB device? I love USB and have 5 ports on my computer so that I can connect my mouse, keyboard, camera, phone, and printer to it all at once!
However, last weekend, my computer stopped recognizing my USB devices! The strange thing about it was that the USB ports were not bad because all of my devices were still getting power to them. I could still charge my cell phone without a problem! So I started with the normal fixing methods, including uninstalling the drivers for my devices and reinstalling them. That didn’t work! Next I tried System Restore thinking that maybe I had installed something and it caused a conflict with the USB system drivers. That didn’t work!
I read online that in order to fix this problem I should go to Device Manager and uninstall all of the devices under USB Controllers. Restarted the computer, reinstalled the USB drivers, but the problem STILL did not go away!
You may also see in Device Manager that the device shows up as an “Unknown Device”.

So how did I finally fix the problem? Well, apparently it’s a super simple solution! No need to edit the registry, uninstall drivers, or anything of that sort.

Simply UNPLUG YOUR COMPUTER FROM THE POWER SUPPLY. Yes that’s it! Note that this does not mean just turning off your computer because modern computers don’t really turn off when you press the power button as the motherboard still gets power.

First to explain, the motherboard is where all of hardware of the computer is connected to, including the USB ports. Sometimes the motherboard needs to be “rebooted” also because something can go wrong, i.e. all your USB ports suddenly stop working. The small microprocessor on the motherboard will reload the drivers and your USB ports should be back to recognizing all devices!

So first turn off your computer using Shut Down or pressing the power button and then UNPLUG it from the wall outlet. Let it sit for about a minute and then plug it back in.

Hope this helps someone fix that pesky “USB device not recognized” Windows error!
